my 3rd generation ipod touch recently lost wifi capabilities. I reset the network settings... this did not help. I did a complete reset, I now no longer have the Safari icon on my itouch. Has Apple removed wifi on older models to force new purchases?

I recently lost wifi capabilities on my 3rd generation ipod touch. I reset the network which did nothing so I did a complete reset. This actually removed the Safari icon off my itouch and still wifi is completely grayed-out. Has Apple removed the wifi capabilities to force the purchase of new items?

I find it completely disturbing that only recently has this become an issue for 3rd generation itouch users.

Can someone please help as I am exceptionally frustrated
