How do I insert iPhotos into a project that has a video clip?

How do I insert iPhotos into a project that has a video clip?

I downloaded my video clips into i Movie and have my stills in iPhoto but I am not able to drag the iPhoto files onto the project. All I see are black boxes when I try.

MacBook, iOS 6

I moved my iPhoto Library onto an ext HD. I can see the new images in an album in iPhoto but the new images in the album are no longer acessible for iMovie.

I tried using the drop down menu in i Movie to select another older album and could add its images to my project.

What am I missing?

I can't add a still again for some reason. I was able to yesterday, but now that I've started on a new project it's back to the problem I had a couple of weeks ago.

Any ideas?
