mouse tools don't do anything

I am trying to fade out at the end of a track. I enabled x-crass fade and clicked on the fade tool. When I place the cursor on the track the fader tool doesn't do anything except work as a pointer tool. All it does is allow me to cut or drag loops. Do the "tools" refer to the mouse cursor or someother function?

I tried clicking on the other tools but they didn't do anything either. I must be doing something very basically wrong?

Logic Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

to use the fade tool, place the cursor either before the start of the region to fade in, or after the region to fade out. Click and drag the cursor over the file for the length of the fade you wish to draw. You don't need to enable crossfade. That is for crossfading from one region to the next wheb regions overlap in the arrangement.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately that is what I have been trying to do. I wonder if you need a special kind of mouse. I opted for a standard single button wired mouse from Apple.

Are you working with an mp3? Logic can't draw fades on compressed file formats. Use the copy/convert function to convert it to an aif file.

This was a great idea. Unfortunately I selected all the files and converted them to Aiff and the fader tool still didn't do anything when I dragged it accross one of the loops. Is ther some other trick that I am missing?

What happens when you select a region and enter a fade amount in the inspector?

Thank you for your help. When I select a track with multiple loops and enter a fade amount it fades out each of the loops in the trackon after the other instead of just fading out the end of the track, which is what I am trying to do.

I said "select a region", not select a track.
