Upgrading from 10.5?

Is it possible to upgrade our Mac desktop operating system? We have 10.5 and so many apps are not supporting this anymore. Do we have to buy a new computer even though the current one is working excellent? Approximately how much would upgrading cost if this is possible? Thanks!
