I have a iMac on 10.7.5 and I have a NEW mac mini Core i7. I have a external WD hard drive in which I use for all my art files. I'm wanting to be able to access the external from BOTH computers. I'm thinking about a USB 3. Is there any thing ya'll would recommend orther then that? or maybe a brand? It will have to atleast hold 3 to 4 USB plugs.
You cannot do that. You can connect the drive to one computer and set up FileSharing with the other computer. Or you could just disconnect the drive from one machine and connect it to the other.

If your routerhas a usb port you can connect the external drive to it and use the drive over the network from all computers on your network.
I use a NAS. I have a D-Link DNS-323 on my network with 2 - 1TB drives in it. Works great and any computer on the network can see it. I am sure they have better models now as I got mine over a year ago!
