Upgrading Mac OS X doesn't delete anything, but I recommend to make a backup before upgrading because it can fail and you can lose files. Apart from this, the upgrade is simple because the Mac OS X installer has got the most recent OS X version, so just start the upgrade and you don't have to do anything until the Mac OS X upgrade finishes
