Desktop symbols - How to erase/delete?

Can somebody pse tell me how to get rid of the 'Sync" symbol that seems to be fixed at the top of my screen. I have tried turing off/on, etc and nothing seems to work. Screenshot below:

Yep - that's a syncing icon (just a wee bit different than the Time Machine icon).


Not sure what's syncing - can you go into Terminal (Applications>Utilities) and search for the word 'sync' and see if you have any sync processes running (I sort of remember this from the 'old days' when I had iCal and Address Book syncing with Microsot Outlook... but I've not seen it in a long, long time).
