Updating my iPod Touch (4G) iTunes gives error (-54) while backing up?

What can I do? Already updated iTunes and restarted the PC. I don't want to lose everything on my iPod to update it.

Unbelievable, before error -54 I experienced another. This time (after restaring the iPod and my pc) it states a problem with restoring the iPod with an unknown error (3004).

According to http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694#error3014 this error describes iTunes not being able to connect to the update server: gs.apple.com.. Apparently it is down.

Sorry if I say so, but this updating method seems very fragile.

I don't know why but my connection to gs.apple.com seems to be very dodgy. Those suggested internet/LAN settings are already in place at Windows 7 at my pc

In iTunes it says it has to restore my iPod before being able to do anything with it anymore, but I really want to be sure I can backup it to the way it was (I don't want to lose anything on it!).
