I have connected a second monitor to my mac Book Pro, I now want to be able to close the lid of the mac Book Pro, when I do so it switches off the screen? how ca I close the top of the Mac book and leave my second monitor active please?

Use the link that Bob provided - and make certain that you have an external mouse (well, or Magic Trackpad - it's just wonderful) and Bluetooth or USB keyboard available.
I run in clamshell mode 90% of the time now - just take my MBP off the desk to travel around the house that other 10% of the time...
