If I point the desktop background option to my hard drive folder with 100,000 pictures, does the OS try to copy them all? Or does it just index them?

If you click Change Desktop Background, it will bring you to this

Then you have the option with the + button to select something other than what currently shows (in my case, iPhoto and Folders.) But, whatever the source, you only select one image. If you somehow managed to select an entire folder with thousands of images--and, anyway, I don't know if it would let you--you'd be in big trouble.
