why is Apple taking i Messages beta away from older MacBook users

I have an Early 2008 white Macbook. I have been using the Messages Beta successfully since it was made available. Now I get an email from Apple telling me that they are going to take it away and that I need to upgrade to Mountain Lion. I CAN'T upgrade to Mountain Lion because my Mac is too old. I can't afford a newer Mac and honestly don't need one. So what happens now? How do I get iChat back on my Mac after they take Messages away? This stinks. They use us to test their product for all these months and now that they have used us they are going to ignore us because we can't afford to don't want to buy a newer Mac product.

I have been a loyal Appple user since 1984. This is sure a lousy way to show any appreciation for that loyalty !

If you want the old iChat back click on messages in the menu bar and then click uninstall messages.

HI,

Historically Apple do remove Betas when they have been used for open testing.

In Jaguar iChat 2, the first with the AV abilities was a beta from the May to the September 30th 2004.

It was then released as a Paid for item at $29.00 for the rest of the "life" of Jaguar.

When Panther came out very soon afterwards it was free with the OS Install and has been ever since.

On a similar note Apple have included some apps such as Graphic Convertor and Comic Life with some OS/Machine combos with no access to updates from there on, which later do not work in later OSes as things change.

Some iLife items also get included with new machines but cannot be upgraded when the OS is upgraded.

On that note Snow Leopard has Quicktime 7 that cannot be updated to Quicktime X

I am sure people could cite other examples of beta versions of applications.

Thank you for your comments. Still makes no sense to take away an app that works fine on Lion. If they were going to do that and only make it available to Mountain Lion why didn't they just release the beta to ML only? And if they wanted me to buy it to keep it at a reasonable price I would understand and be willing to pay for it. My thinking is that its more about forcing the obsolescence of older machines than anything. And possibly now that there has been time for many ML upgrades their servers may be handling more traffic and this is a way to cut down on that. I'm thinking that iChat does not use the same servers.

Even without Messages I still have iChat and Facetime but having it all in the same app with more integration of contact lists was a lot smoother and easier to use.

Hi,

The Messages beta was released before Mountain Lion was Available is one answer.

There is probably some truth that people are "encouraged" to upgrade to new OSes and versions of Apps that work with them.

I certainly bought a new Intel computer so I could continue to help with iChat and now Messages (Note to self. Must get a life).

I can certainly appreaciate the annoyance at the push forward.

I have a G4/1Ghz tower that has extra drives and can run OS 9 and has partitions and Drives for Jaguar through Leopard which is about 5 different versions of the OS. My MacBook Pro which a Core Duo processor only manage 3 versions from new - Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard - it cannot run Lion or Mountain Lion which needs the Core 2 Duo Processor or later

Messages (Beta) does give you that ability to use the iMessage service to contact iPhone numbers and people using iMessages rather than AIM or Jabber.

FaceTime allows you to Video to those same Contacts.

I don't think it is likely to be a server issue.

In Messages it seems you cannot register your Apple ID if the Motherboard is not storing the Serial Number.

This can get removed during a repair or refurbishment (my understanding is that is it supposed to be replaced).

However this check only seems to have arisen with OS X 10.8.2 and maybe Messages beta is being removed as it does not make this check. (it would be one way to verify the Mac was a suitable machine or in fact a Mac).
