If my email is presently on my desktop as Microsoft Outlook ... can I successfully select Microsoft Exchange on my Iphone 4s to establish my email on my phone?

Not necessary, unless your email account is an Exchange account. Actually it won't work like that unless it is. All you need to set up your email on your phone is your account settings. Who is your email provider?

I am with VERIZON ... an @verizon.net accout.    In some other conversations people sounded like they were compatible to sync your contacts and calendar ... already set up.  ... Not that I can't start fresh if need be.  ... and it's easier.

      (thanks for your help)

You can sync contacts and calendar, that is a separate issue. You can also select to sync the settings of your email over from the computer in iTunes as well. If that does not work, you can set up the email account directly on the phone, however you will not use the Exchange setting. That would only be used for an Exchange account. You would use the "Other" setting, again if necessary. Syncing the setting over in iTunes should work, or you may just need to make some minor adjustments.

I just tried the OTHER setting ... seemed to auto populate a bit but now I have to find/remember my Incoming/outgoing verizon POP password - hopefully written down.  thanks for your help.

Like I said earlier, if it is setup on the computer, you should be able to just sync it over. But, it isn't a bad ideal to know your passwords!
