Mac wedged after sudo nvram boot-args="-x" - any ideas?

Tried to safe boot per advise in this article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455). Had trouble doing that via shift key so tried this advanced trick:

sudo nvram boot-args="-x"

Now my machine keeps restarting on login and is completely unusable! Anyone else have this problem, any advice on recovery? Wonder if there's any connection to having the disk encrypted. I'm running Mac OS X 10.8.2.

To undo this, you run this command:

sudo nvram boot-args=""

but I can't log in (or ssh to the computer) so can't run that command.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Assuming you have physical access to the machine (doubtful, since you mentioned ssh), Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.
