cannot empty trash

when I try to secire delete the trash I get a pop up with 3 options "cancel" "remove unlocked items" and "remove all items"

when I chose either of the the latter two it attempts to delete a few items then simply stops.

How do I force it to secure delete or how do I identify and remove the problem item(s) from the trash?

Mac OS X (10.7.3)
