how do i stop it from talking

just started using my mac and i want to stop it from talking

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Open System Preferences > Accessibility. In here you will find all the settings for those that are hard of sight/hearing etc. There's an option to use 'Voiceover', turn this off and you should get some peace and quiet.

You may have accidentally activated the "VoiceOver" feature. You can check and control this in System Preferences > Accessibility > VoiceOver or toggle it on/off with command-F5.
