Q: What do I do if I am having problems installing Security Update 2012-004?

All,

 

Howdy.  My Software Update fails every time I attempt to install the Security Update 2012-004.  I can use the Software Update for other installations.  I downloaded the Security Update 2012-004.dmg from the Apple Support site.  However, that installation failed as well.  Any pointers or tips that I could try?

 

Processor:  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory:  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

    Sorry,  I happen to be on overload tonight between the kids, and other family matters, please excuse me.  One last thing to try is a safe boot, this will boot your OS and exclude any third party applications.  It should allow you to use Safari and internet, but get everything not OS out of the way.  SAFE BOOT: power off mac, power back on holding shift key before start chime, continue to hold shift key (this will take longer than a normal boot, be patient) till you see the progress bar and spinning gear, then release. Wait for login window, then login. Open Safari, go to safari preferences, click reset, then try to do the download and install again.  If this brings no joy, you might need to re-install your OS.  Let me know how this works, and we will proceed from here.  SJP

    Make sure in Safari preferences>security that java is turned off. java script is ok as well as plug ins.  If you still have problems,make an appointment at the Genius bar, go to an Apple store, and ask nicely if they would do the download for you. They are usually col guys who will do this for you, a well as tell you why it would not not work for you.  I am VERY sorry I was no help to you, as  this has NEVER been a problem with any of my machines before.  My sincere apologizes.  SJP

    You've been very helpful - thanks.  I may not get to the safeboot until tomorrow.  I'll let you know how it works out.  Either way, I appreciate all of your help and support these past 24 hours!

    I wanted to follow up.  The safe boot did not work.  I will take it in to have it looked at in about 2 weeks.  If they can give me a proper diagnosis, I will update this forum.  Thanks again for your time.
