What do I do if I am having problems installing Security Update 2012-004?

All,

Howdy. My Software Update fails every time I attempt to install the Security Update 2012-004. I can use the Software Update for other installations. I downloaded the Security Update 2012-004.dmg from the Apple Support site. However, that installation failed as well. Any pointers or tips that I could try?

This is quite unusual, I would like you to try yet another step. Quit all programs. Press shift, command,U, this will take you to utilities. Go to Disk Utilities App and open it (double click). In the left column highlight your user drive (usually called Macintosh HD, unless you renamed it) then click Repair Permissions, after this finishes (which might take a while) quit all applications and try the download again. By the way I've not found anything in the knowledge base to refer to as this is first of this particular case I've seen, so I am going thru a trouble shooting "dance with you, I appreciate your patience.

Well, I gave it a shot, but same error. I repaired the permissions several times. I also verified permissions. I was surprised that there still seemed to be permissions that needed to be repaired even after the first, second, or even third time. I took a screenshot of the last time I repaired permissions, just in case it would be helpful. I get the feeling that no matter how many times I repaired the permissions, it would never be completely 'repaired' (this was not the first time I repaired permissions - I experienced the same thing back then). Here's the screenshot:

What else should I try?

So, for whatever reason, it seems my last post didn't stick. So, here it is again.

I repaired the permissions several times. I thought that after the first time, there would be no more permissions that needed to be 'repaired'. Perhaps it doesn't work that way. After repairing permissions about 5x, I tried it again, but got the same result as before. I also verified permissions - no change. I took a screenshot of the last permissions that I repaired. Maybe it will help...

Is there anything else you'd recommend?

Sanjampet,

That last link was to 2011 (not 2012)-004. Did you want me to install the 2011-004 update? Or perhaps it was a typo on the webpage... Also, the link discusses the security update, but does not provide the actual security update file. I have downloaded the file from another link within Apple (which is what I've been trying to install up until now). Could you clarify what I should be using that link for? Thanks.

Sorry, I happen to be on overload tonight between the kids, and other family matters, please excuse me. One last thing to try is a safe boot, this will boot your OS and exclude any third party applications. It should allow you to use Safari and internet, but get everything not OS out of the way. SAFE BOOT: power off mac, power back on holding shift key before start chime, continue to hold shift key (this will take longer than a normal boot, be patient) till you see the progress bar and spinning gear, then release. Wait for login window, then login. Open Safari, go to safari preferences, click reset, then try to do the download and install again. If this brings no joy, you might need to re-install your OS. Let me know how this works, and we will proceed from here. SJP
