I do not see the apple tv icon even though I am on the same wifi network as my Mac. Please help.

If you mean in iTunes, you don't with ATV2 or ATV3 unless you are restoring them via USB.

No, not in iTunes. I went to System Preferences and selected mirroring. I have OS X Mountain Lion. Still nothing in my display.
I have been going on these threads for 6 months with no discernable answer but finally found a fairly good reason. Most will suggest changing the airplay on the Apple TV. Did that no help. Next change the settings on your computer. Did that no help ( it seems you did all these also). If you get to this point people assume you did something wrong in the first few steps but probably not. Look at your IP address on both your computer and Apple TV. It is likely different and that is why they are not connecting. Try resetting your modem while your Apple TV and computer are both turned on. They should both connect to the first available IP address which should be the same and the icon should appear again. I wish they would have added this step and explanation on their support page awhile ago. It would have helped greatly.
