Sound on Macbook Pro not working?

Since this morning the sound on my macbook pro has not been working? I had headphones plugged in and suddenly the sound stopped working, I didn't think anything of it and later when I'd unplugged the headphones the sound still isn't working? Why is this?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

Have you setup the Sound in System Preferences for Internal Speakers?

Mine are set-up for my Apple Thunderbolt Display - yours should be set for Internal Speakers. It's possible that you're 'stuck' on audio out via the headphones - just make sure that System Prefs are set correctly and wiggle the headphone jack around a bit in the port until you have sound coming out of your speakers.

It's possible that you're 'stuck' on audio out via the headphones - just make sure that System Prefs are set correctly and wiggle the headphone jack around a bit in the port until you have sound coming out of your speakers.

System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers

Make sure Mute is not enabled.


If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone

in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.

Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.

Choose the method for:

"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".

Some time ago I had this problem too. I had another Macbook with a broken main board, so I decided to wrack the connector. This showed clearly how the switch inside the connector works. It is a "normal on" switch, and it switches to off if a plug is plugged in. Then the software senses the connection to determine if this is a audio plug (metal) or a a optical connector (plastic). What happens, is that some dirt sticks on the switch, so the computer "thinks" it has a connector plugged in. Since it senses no connection, it switches to optical. The solution is clearly to clean the switch. That can be done, sometimes it might work from the outside, with the toothpick, compressed air, or whatever, but that didn't work for me. Best is to open up your mac, removing the keyboard, etc. Follow the instruction here: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/MacBook-Core-Duo-PRAM-Battery/297/1, but not all the way! Don't remove the main board, or the cpu-cooler. Go so far that you can reach the metal strip on top of the connectors. This strip should be bend so that the connector is reachable. See first photo.The audio connector is inside a metal box. That box is for radio wave interference and for strength. So you can just wrack it open with pincers and a screw driver. Just watch out you don't drop any metal parts on the main board! When the box is removed, remove the plastic top. Now it is quite simple to clean the switch. See photo 2, the arrow is pointing to the switch. Don't be confused by the photo, you shouldn't remove the connector from the main board! On the left you see the wracked metal box. I used compressed air to clean the switch. When done (just connect the keyboard and start your mac to test), put back the plastic top, put some tape on it to keep it together and if you don't use brute force injecting a connector, you will be fine...

Sadly, no solution seems to work for me, though I haven't tried a toothpick or opening up the box. The sound issue was subsequent to unplugging my headphones. That said, there is no red light in the port. Everything looks normal in system preferences.


I tried plugging and unplugging the headphones several times. I reset the PRAM. I reset the SMC. I even reinstalled the OS from disk recovery.

Hello.


I have just faced the same problem. I put my MBP on migration from my iMac for the night with headphones plugged into the former and in the morning it would not play sounds.


I have found the root of the problem and the solution though. I had some web-streaming software on my iMac (Soundflower, for instance) and the MBP for some reason selected it as the main software for sound input and output. I had to delete Soundflower from Apps folder and reboot the MBP. It worked.

DIRECTIONS:

1. Go To System Preference > Sound > Output

2. Keep this window open as you test

Mine was stuck on digital mode and when I plugged my headphones in, it displayed:

Name: Headphones

Type: Headphone Port


3. Unplug the headphone and watch it change name and type back to digital

4. Continue to do this while observing what mode it is in based on the name and type displayed. It should change as you continue to plug and unplug.

5. It is back to normal when you see:

Name: Internal Speakers

Type: Built-in


It may take many iterations until the audio port is finally "unstuck". I think maybe some had given up too early as I too had given up after 10 iterations. After trying again for much longer iterations, it finally worked. Remember, observe the Sound Output setting as you are doing this. Good luck!
