First USB port stops working after random time and won't work until I restart

Hey guys

I have this problem on my late 2011 Macbook Pro 13 inch,

It's been for a year already and it really freaks me out and drive me crazy

My first USB port next to the thunderbolt stops working after like 3 days, and it won't respond until I restart my computer or log off and log in again.

If I restart my computer, USB stops working after 3 days and won't respond until I restart

If I log off it works for like a couple of hours and then stops again

I have tried EVERYTHING, SMC reset - no luck, PRAM reset - same results, Upgraded to lion same results, Upgraded to mountain lion - SAME RESULT

And I can't take it to an apple store because I'm not from the US

I am 100% sure this is a software problem and I've seen here that many people have faced this problem

Please help, it really freaks me out

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I've a late 2011 15" and use both of my USB ports for my clone drives. Both work just fine. I'm not so sure that it's a software problem as I'm running ML as well and having no problems. I keep one USB clone drive (my 'current' clone) hooked up 90% of the time with no problems. It could be a hardware problem - only way to find out is possibly to run anApple Hardware Test. If you come up with errors, you'll know. If no errors, you'll just have to take your unit to your local Apple Store and let them run further diagnostics.

Good luck,

Clinton

Yeah you're right I did it again and then it showed me that symbol,

Alright I did an extended test and it clearly said no problems found.

I also did a Disk repair and an SMC reset and a PRAM reset, hope it did something I'll wait 3 days and see if it's fixed.

Do you have any more suggestions of what I can try, I though about formatting my mac but idk if I should try this.

And I can't take it to an apple store because I'm not from the US

Thanks alot Clinton I really appreciate it 🙂

You don't have to be from the US to have your Macbook repaired. As long as your Macbook is still covered under the Apple Care warranty and it is registered under your name, you can take it to any Apple Store or any AASP.

As for the diagostic tool, unfortunately, the Apple Hardware Test does not check the USB port but it will test the logic board that it is connected to. Only Apple certified technicians have a more comprehensive software diagnostic tools to determine if any hardware is malfunctioning.

I'm sure this isn't what you want to hear but unless you really are using your laptop 24 hours a day, is there any reason why you don't just shut it down and reboot when you're ready to use it again? I have to wonder how many other MacBook Pro owners potentially have the same problem but when they quit computing for the day, their computers quit too.

I've checked right now, there's only one place in my country and it's pretty far and I'm not sure it's worth the time and effort, also my warranty has ran out.

I'm 99% sure this is a software problem, since it works every time I relog or restart, and since I did a hardware test.

Do you think I should format my mac? I thought about it but I'm really not sure, I'm still searching for different solutions atm

Thanks.
