why did my superdrive stop working after i installed leopard?

I have a G5 Power Mac. I used a DVD to install an upgrade to OS 10.5 (leopard) from 10.4. I ejected the disc before restarting the computer and when Leopard powered up, I could no longer eject the disc to instal the iLife '09 disc. I've downloaded every superdrive firmware available on Apple Support, but i get "this computer does not need this" message every time and the G5 won't let me install the firmware. Does anyone know why the drive stopped working, or how to get it back?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Hi, are you holding the F12 key down long enough to eject it, I think they added a few seconds lag in 10.5.x
