I can't play my itunes through my bluetooth headset on my iphone5 HELP!

I can play itunes through the phone or through a tethered headset, but not any bluetooth headset? I thought you could do this. If so, how? Interestingly, if I am speaking to someone on the phone, then I can listen to itunes via the bluetooth headset simultaneously. Very strange. Please help! Thanks!
