black margins down each side of my screen, so reduced screen size, can anyone help please?

I have 2 black margins down each side of the viewable sceen, I've tried going in to 'full screen mode' but all tha happens is that I lose my footers and headers, the screen view still remains long and narrow rather that filling the screen top to bottom and sise to side. Can anyone help please?

I think the reason your screen looks like this is because the screen was somehow scaled differently in System Preferences. To fix this open up the System Preferences app and click on "Displays". Next click on "Scaled" and make sure it says "1280 x 800" or the top one in the list so it should look like this: User uploaded file

Then that's it.

If this doesn't work try restarting your MacBook Pro or resetting the SMC or PRAM.

Hope this helps,

Daniel,

Thank you for your response. I've done what you have suggested but its not worked either. Firstly, I dont have the 'scaled' option to choose from, only resolution size, so I changed the res to 1280x800 which altered the black margins to white - but the actual viewable area is still elongated so I'm still unable to see my apps bar along the bottom, or the full width of my email screen. I'm a bit worried about resetting the SMC or PRAM as I'm not very technicla and could make things worse? This change to my screen happend between the last time i used my MAC (so it was fine when I sent my last email), but when I went back in from 'sleep' mode', it had these black margins, so its not like I was making any changes in System Prefs .....do you think I may have done this by mistake by some keyboard shortcut?

I can almost guarantee you that resetting the SMC and PRAM won't make the problem worse, but then again it is always your choice. Also about the keyboard shortcut, I don't think a keyboard shortcut could change the look of your display but there always is a chance. I looked this up on Google and a lot of results came up with people that seem to be having the same problem as you: https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=mac+screen+has+black+margin s&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

I would try one of those.

Hope this helps,

Hi Daniel,

I read through the posts on Google and it seems that re-setting the SMC and PRAM didnt work and I'm really nervous about making things worse. My Macbook Pro is only a few months old, I think I will now go back to the Apple dealer where I bought it and let them sort it out, I assume they will need to take responsibility as it still under warranty? This is my first Mac and I am a bit disappointed that I'm having problems this soon. I do appreciate you've tried to help.
