Upgrading from Logic Express 8 to 9 and transferring to new computer

I have Logic Express 8 on a four-year-old MacBook Pro. Can I load the 8 (I have it on disc) onto a new MacBook Pro and then upgrade to 9? Or is the software "unique" to one computer only?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Not sure what you're waiting for because

1) LE9 is awesome. Don't know where you've been hearing "an awful lot of complaining."

2) Apple is likely busy working on the new Logic Pro X and I seriously doubt that you will see much if any further development on LE9, since it is a discontinued product.

3) If you're that concerned, why not just get Logic Pro for $200 and get an upgrade path? Logic Express is dead.
