Ethernet is "connected" in System Preferences, but doesn't work

I am running OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on a 2010 27" iMac, quad core i5 with 4gb ram. Under System Preferences --> Network, it says my Ethernet is connected, and even shows an IP Address, along with a Subnet Mask. However, I am only able to connect and browse the internet with a wifi connection. The ethernet, although "connected", doesn't connect me to the internet. Weird...can anybody help, or suggest what to do? Thanks!

Getting an IP address is just part of getting IP packets to route from Ethernet to the target host.

Your DNS server, DHCP server and/or IP gateway routing settings appears incorrect for your network, and/or the associated server(s) are not responding, or there's some part of the network connection between your Ethernet and the internet that is offline.
