time machine could not complete backup

we received the following message. but not sure what it means as we cannot determine what else might be using the disk image.

Time machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/riks iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use.

anybody have ideas as to how to fix so the backups can continue?
