My brand new Mac Pro running Mountain Lion crashes when installing updates or new software.

My brand new Mac Pro running Mountain Lion crashes and re-boots when installing updates or new software. I can only perform these operations while in the safe boot mode. I have reloaded OSX twice. Does not solve the problem. The machine is brand new. It replaced a previous MacPro that would not support the new Mountain Lion. When my new machine came in. I swaped the dirve out of my old unit into the new and ran the new Lion update. The machine has had this aforementioned problem since that time. Also, I had the Legacy version of File Vault running on the old machine/drive, which I also turned off(thinking that was the problem) but that did not fix the problem either.

So far to my knowledge, any Mac Pro has been able to boot 10.6.5 or later and your old system though was a 2006-7 MacPro1,1 or 2,1 which could run Lion but may best with 10.6.8.

The 2008 3,1 actually seem to have a lot more issues wtih post-10.6.8 and resolving those problems is often a matter of going back.

The ideal is to get Apple OEM DVD 10.6.4+ or the 10.6.8 flash drive.

The firmware so far has not been a limiting factor in preventing booting 10.6.5.

And the more details and hardware and even EFI version, the better.

You should seriously consider establishing a Boot drive, with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix files (including Paging/Swap) on it. User files are moved off to another drive.

This makes maintaining the System and maintaining your User files much easier, and it makes your Mac faster in every way.

of 10.8.2?

There is no official CD or DVD of 10.7 or later. If you want one, you have to re-download the version you bought (or came with your Mac) from the Mac App Store (which stamps it with your Apple_ID) and wait for the download to finish. When the Installation starts, cancel it.

Right click on the installer Image and make a DVD from the file called "Install ESD". Step-by-step Instructions are available from other sites with a quick search.

You must make the DVD BEFORE the Installation, because the Installer Image on your Hard Drive is consumed during the Installation. Many files are simply "moved into place" rather than being copied, and the stuff that remains is deleted at the end of the Install.

EDIT: Check the size -- 10.7.4 is 4.18GB. 10.8 may exceed a standard 4.7GB DVD and require a Dual-Layer DVD.

Some readers suggest that a large flash Drive or Hard drive is a perfectly good alternative to a DVD, but I am not sure whether the Installer would still try to delete itself after installing. It would certainly speed up the Install -- DVD is s-l-o-w.

My brand new Mac Pro running Mountain Lion crashes when installing updates or new software.
