Importing Music from a Back-up Flash Drive

I recently had to backup my computer and then do a total system recovery. I thought it would be an easy thing to import the music from my back-up flash drive, but found that once the flash drive was removed, Itunes would not recognize the music. How can I get my music back into Itunes?
