scripts in /usr/local/etc/periodic don't run

Need to add a local periodic script, and so created /usr/local/etc/periodic, chmod'd to 755, and added my script. It doesn't run. Moved it to /etc/periodic/daily and it runs normally. Can't find a command in /etc/defaults/periodic.conf or in the /etc/periodic/daily/999.local script to actually run scripts in /usr/local/etc/periodic so wonder if anyone has gotten this working, and how.

Xserve quad core; Xserves; MacBook(s); Air; iMac(s); mini(s); etc., etc., iOS 4, Yep, I'm an entire unpaid IT department.
