New Earpods Not Working with my MacBook Pro (no Skype chats or iTune music)

Why are the new Earpods not useable in my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.7.5 ? As a result, I cannot use it for Skype chats or listen to music with iTune from my Macbook Pro.

However, the same Earpods work well with my old iPod touch, and even my Android HTC phone, but not with the Apple's own Macbook Pro ?

Very strange. Could anyone help to answer this ?
