sync keychain and backup keychain in snow leopard

When I go to preferences in keychain access the sync option is grayed out. How do you sync keychain with other computers, using icloud? I have two computers using snow leopard and one using 10.8+ If I copy library/keychains to a flash drive/external drive can I use that as a backup in case the original is corrupt?
