iMovie import from a USB connection?

Can iMovie import from a USB connection? My Canon DC230 does not have Firewire

iPad 2, iOS 5.0.1

Yes. Your camera is listed among those that iMovie supports. See this list, and you will see your camera.

USB works for everything except DV-tape cameras.
