iPod keeps jarring very loudly

My iPod keeps stopping mid-track. It stays frozen until I press any button, when it makes a really loud ear-splitting jarring sound and then resumes like normal. The jarring noise is so loud I can hear it when I hold the earphones at arm's length, regardless of the music volume. What's going on?
