Never use iPhoto myself, but when a blank CD shows up on the desktop, assuming you don't have iPhoto or such set to handle blanks, then drag many photos to the CD /Burn icon on the Desktop.

Please can you tell me what is the best disk to use for photos; cd or dvd.

Depends on what you want them for. For straight transfer of the data (in this case photos) either will do. If you are making a slide show you should use a DVD.
Most recommended brands of DVD-R are Verbatim, Maxell, Fuji and Taiyo Yuden.
