Most likely in the hidden /username//Library/Application\ Support/AddressBook/ folder, named AddressBook-v22.abcddb.
What folder do I have to restore to get a previous Contact list ? Do you say I should restore only the AddressBook-v22.abcddb folder ?
Provided the backed up OS and the present one are the same, restore the entire ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook folder.
What should I do to restore my contacts when the OS versions are not the same. The original contacts are from adressbook with SnowLeopard and the new OS is MountainLion?
It's worth a try anyway, in the worst case = an error from Contacts being unable to read the database, you can simply delete the restored files again.
In such case, or even as a first step, you may try to use the "Import..." procedure by pointing to a *.abcddb database file from your backup.
Hint: Before system upgrades presenting me with new versions of Contacts or Calendar, I always backup my databases separately as well per "Export..." in archive format. No trouble so far.
