will this for sure transfer my text messages even if I'm going from a 4 to a 5?

SMS/text messages are part of the iPhone backup. If you restore your new phone from the backup of the old phone, then the SMS messages should transfer.

Did you create a backup of the iPhone 7 Plus? Did you restore your new phone from the backup of that iPhone? If you were presented with multiple backup choices, did you use the most current one?
