why does the apple symbol on the back of my iMac not light up when computer is on

why does the apple symbol on the backside of my imac not light when my imac is on?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

THANK YOU VERY MUCH MR. rkaufman! You were very helpful. This is my first apple computer and I do not know why I waited so long to swich over from Windows to what seems to be far better.
