Why does my ipod nano(early version) cut off songs, then go to the next song?

Why does my ipod nano ( early version) cut off in the middle of songs, then go to the next song? It's always the same songs that get cut off. This started after my last download from Itunes, in which music that was not purchased jumped onto the download.

Two things come to mind: Does your iPod nano have a 'fade' option in the settings? Also, of the songs that are skipping, if they were copied from CDs, did the CDs have scratches or something similar that would prevent the songs from copying into iTunes correctly? If it's a 'No' to both questions, have someone at the closest Apple store take a look.
