Can I scan with OCR software with Mac and HP OfficeJet 6500A Plus Wireless Printer

My HP Printer works for both my PC and Mac desktop with Mt Lion. I can scan with OCR with the PC but cannot figure out if or HOW to scan with OCR onto my MAC computer. Is it possible and HOW do I do it? I already downloaded the software from HP but I did not have to since the MAC picked up the wireless signal even before downloading it. I just cannot figure out how to get and use OCR on the MAC. Please be detailed in your instructions as I am new to MAC.

I'm not familiar with HP printers exactly, but try this (which works for my Epson printer):

Go to System Preferences (in the Menu bar under the Apple logo). Click "Print & Scan". Hopefully your HP printer appears on the left (it may appear twice ... if so, try this with each occurrence). Click on it on the left side. Then you will hopefully see two tabs on the top right: a "Print" tab and a "Scan" tab. Clicking on "Scan" gives you everything you need.

Good luck!

Thank you. At least I figured out how to scan a document into the computer. But, I did not get so far as to see if I could edit it. I would seem that Apple would make this easier or come up with software. Anyway, I have an idea on how to do it now. Would it make a difference if I HARD WIRED the printer to the computer??Thanks

Hi,

Scanning OCR is not supported via Image Capture.

Download and install the full feature HP software below:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=dj-108350- 1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=219&product=4083977&sw_lang=

Be sure to select HP Recommended Software during the installation.

Now open the HP Scan application (located under Applications\Hewlett-Packard) and compelte the scan, from the save dialog select any editable file as TXT or RTF.

My HP printer is functioning wireless. Should connect the USB cable? Is this necessary? I already downloaded this

Is this not the appropriate download? Should I delete this?

Hi konagal,

The drivers installed from Apple provide you basic scan capabilities, it does not provide this kind of capabilities as text recognision.

Follow the steps listed in my previous post and use the HP Scan for such a purpose, there is no need to remove any previous software prior installing the HP software.

There is no need to switch to USB connection, it will work over the network connection as well.
