I am confused when it says i need to update it when I just bought this laptop today...and the updates list does not say i need to update the OS X.

Your laptop shipped with 10.8.1. There was supposed to be a 10.8.2 update for it but it had problems and has been delayed.

You'll just have to wait.
Have you run all of the MacBook Pro updaters that have been released in response to the problem that Malcolm provided the link to? Apple - Support - MacBook Pro Retina. If not then apply all that are relavant and downlload and apply the OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.2 (Combo) updater. Then try updating iPhoto again.

Why does it say "iPhoto can’t be installed on “Macintosh HD” because OS X version 10.8.2 or later is required." when i need to update my iPhoto?
