My ipod just stopped working. It was working just fine the night before and when I woke up, it refused to turn on. I've done everything in the book, but it refuses to turn on or reset. What should I do?

So the night before, I charged my ipod (4th generation 8GB) through my laptop. I disconnected it and listened to a couple of songs before shutting it off and going to bed. When I woke up, my ipod refused to turn on. The whole day, I've done nothing but resetting and reinstalling methods, but nothing has worked. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that my ipod is pretty old. I've had it for 5 years and it's pretty beat up. The top part where you can lock the ipod is completely gone, but that did not prohibit the ipod from working before. When I connect my ipod to my laptop, there's a message that pops up and it says that the USB device that you have plugged in has mulfunctioned and cannot be recognized. I'm truly at a loss and I'm pretty desperate for any assistance. I want to know if it can be fixed before Black Friday, that way I can make plans to purchase a new one. Thank you!😉
