Can iMovie '09 detect a Hitachi DVDHDD Hybrid camcorder?

I've connected my Hitachi DVDHDD Hybrid camcorder to my MBP and have opened iMovie '09. However the camcorder is not being detected. Does anyone know of a way to create a connection?
