Contacts on old 3G iphone but nowhere else, how I can I get them in the cloud etc ?

I am trying to get my contacts to the cloud from my 3G iphone so that they are there when i want to use icloud from my powerbook G4 etc and so that they will also download tomy me new iphone 5

Is there some sort of facility that I can force them to go to the cloud or am I missing something out. I just thought that they would be there. My camendar seems to be working but the "notes" facility is also blank.
