I uploaded photos and sent a link to friends, but I do not see the journal in my iCloud when I sign in.

You won't see it there. It's viewable at the link you gave your friends, but can be edited only in iPhoto on the device which created it.
And you won't. The only way to view them online is via the link you sent out.
