Upgrading my time capsule. Can I transfer from old to new the backups directly

I am upgrading my 1 terabyte time capsule with a new 2 terabyte capsule. Is there a way to connect the two and upload directly the backups for my IMAC and Macbook Air from one machine to the other?

Time Capsule 802.11n (4th Gen), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Yes, although IMHO, it is better to start anew.

Hard to believe eh??

Of course our local hero, Pondini, beat the apple doco by several years.

Plus it is better.

I have a MacBook Air so no ethernet. Do you have suggestions for the best way to connect the computer and drives?

What drives?? Do you mean a pair of Time Capsules??

You can buy a USB to ethernet .. genuine Apple adapter fairly cheap.. and Thunderbolt to ethernet adapter not so cheap.. but either would make it work a lot better than doing it by wireless.

If you try this by wireless you will be double hopping.. you can do ethernet adapter to one and wireless to the other.. up close and set to 5ghz.

Thanks. For the Airs (I have two of them) I jut have a backup drives not TC, but going to use new TC for future. The backup drive just has USB connection. The new Air has Thunderbolt and USB, but the older Air has just USB. What might be the fastest way to get the older backups to the new TC? I might not have to do this for the older Air, and just start over.

IMHO just start over.. for sure.. keep the old disk as archive for a while.. but copying backups from local to network drive adds complexity. TM does not backup to network drive exactly the same as to local drive.

USB drive copied via air to TC is certainly possible.. In the TC give a different name to 5ghz wireless so you can force the air to use it.. 5ghz is substantially faster as long as you are in the same room with it.

Or buy the thunderbolt to ethernet cable.. and use that.. connect the external drive to your newer air.. that should be very fast. Watch out for thunderbolt issues though.. it is not always smooth sailing.

Read Q18 as referenced above.. it is most important that you create the correct sparsebundle to store the local backup.

Thank you very much. Your idea of keeping the old disk for a while and starting over weill be the best solution for my two Airs. My iMac is using TC now so switching those backups should be relatively easy with Ethernet connections.

Again, I appreciate your help and ideas, and now I can feel comfortable all weill go smoothly with the transition to my new TC.
