airport extreme wifi issues

I have recently bought an airport extreme as I was told this will significantly improve my wifi reception in my house. Sadly this has not been the case and I have been trying all manner of positioning and channels to get it to work. Is this a fault or is there another setting I am not sure about? The wifi works when you are within 10-15 feet and at the same level. However if you walk one flight of stairs to my bedroom (even though the router is immediatly below, through a plastic roof) the signal is lost. Any suggestions please?

The person who provided this information may not have known that the broadcast power of wireless routers is limited by law, so they all tend to behave pretty much the same in installations.

If you are saying that the AirPort Extreme is behaving about the same as your previous wireless router, that would be expected.

You will likely need to add another AirPort device in the bedroom and connect it back to the AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet cable.
