movie controls stopped working

my movie controls have stopped working

such as

the trans port controls appear when I move the mouse

using the escape key to cancel out of the movie

the ONLY way I can close a full screen movie is to click it and look for an 'x' in the upper left corner.

I am on a mbp retina runing the latest os/itunes.
