How do I replace a corrupted iTunes file on iCloud?

I had an album that I had purchased on iTunes a few years ago, but when iCloud was added it was somehow corrupted. I was so frustrated I ended up deleting and repurchasing. This is MobileMe all over again. How do I prevent this from happening? Or, do I just stop purchasing anything from iTunes?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion, 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 8GB 1067 MHz

Not really sure. The previous Apple debacle known as MobileMe borked my user accounts so in the end I was left with two accounts that were supposed to be one account. I suppose there is some way of checking exactly which it came from, but any new purchases I keep to the one account. Although if I continue to get corruption errors from iCloud I will simply stop purchasing any more items from Apple. Paying once is enough.


Does it come up immediately as having already purchased if I click on buy? I was hoping (since I had already purchased previously) when I clicked on buy it would show at that point that I had already bought. When I clicked on the button it did not appear to recognize that I had already purchased. I will know in a few days when I get the receipt, in which case that will be my last purchase from iTunes.

iCloud does NOT store your music, your library of purchased music can be re-downloaded, and if you have iTunes Match enabled all of your music can be re-downloaded. Neither of these are anything to do with iCloud, let alone Mobile Me.

Yes, I can re-download from iCloud, it then spends several minutes downloading (very large about 1 hour song) whereupon it complains at the end that the item was corrupt, whereupon the iCloud icon reappears so I can rinse, repeat, ad infinitum. So, where the song (an environmental sound album) previously existed locally on my macbook pro, iPhone, iPad and worked perfectly well for the last couple years, it now only exists as an entry on iCloud but will never download to any of those devices. But, after I delete and repurchase it miraculously works again.


The only time this problem showed up was after iCloud was inserted into the mix. iCloud may not uniquely store the music, but it must persist some sort of state otherwise this would not have been a problem. If the state was not persisted, how would it determine if it was corrupt or not. And how would it have magically been fixed by deleting and repurchasing if it wasn't storing any unique information? My issue is that I should not have to repurchase. Knowing that a portion of the problem is an artifact left over from the bad old MobileMe days (duplicate accounts that were cross-linked on the Apple server) doesn't make me feel much better. And the fact that the spanking new iCloud infrastructure somehow managed a corruption of the data doesn't give me hope for the future.


So, this problem has nothing to do with iCloud? Don't bother posting when you are obviously clueless and offer no help to the problem.

That is so true. My music I paid for is not in iCloud (and is therefore inaccessible), and that makes me very snippy. I have already fixed it without your help at the cost of one album, but hopefully others will think twice about investing their hard earned dollars into something that is so ephemeral. Interestingly, I have managed to retain the hard earned dollars I put into vinyl records from the 1960's, but not the high tech bytes I have invested in Apple server-side technologies. Although I have not lost a single bit from other cloud based technologies such as Amazon, GitHub, Dropbox, Google, etc.


Maybe Apple should consider licensing / purchasing expertise and infrastructure from them?

Csound1 is entirely correct. iCloud is often confused with "iTunes in the cloud". So, to start, you're posting this issue in the wrong forum. Second, if you we're charged again, odds are you're confusing two different apple ids, which is alluded to earlier. Lastly, on the very slightly off chance you were correct that you were charged twice, you can simply request a refund at expresslane.apple.com by following the right prompts.

I won't really know if I have been charged twice until I receive the receipt in a few days. It appeared to be charging me again, but if I don't ever receive a receipt I guess it didn't. Assuming I was charged, I will post the invoice to expresslane url and hopefully get my refund.


If not, the money was already spent, and my co-workers have kindly shown me their setups with Amazon, et al. that gets them the same benefits (even on Apple devices) without the contortions I have gone through. I have already stopped purchasing audible books directly from iTunes for similar reasons, going directly to the source and without the hassles. It will be an easy next step if that is what it takes.

I think the phantom apple ID I had several years ago (and which likely had my original purchase I had problems with) is the culprit. It does me no good now and the apple customer support at the time was only able to correct some of the problem.

Notice the iCloud icon from my music menu on iTunes. This is where my problems started.


It is the introduction of the iCloud into iTunes that has caused me the problem, therefore that is where I posted. Because it is an integration between iTunes and the myriad of backend server stuff called "iCloud". I am sure the actual technical problem could be in any one of a thousand different software components including the hundreds that make up iTunes. Does the average user need to break out XCode and debug the whole process before they post "there is a FooBar exception thrown on line 3985 of ITunesBorksiCloud.c" before they can get solutions here?

iCloud and iTunes are not connected to each other, the icon in iTunes is a cloud, not iCloud though, it is iTunes Match. If you really can't understand that sign out of iCloud and then go to iTunes, the cloud icons will still be there.


But I think you are determined to follow your own fallacious beliefs so I'm out of here, I hope you can muddle through.

Oh, and don't bother with any more replies. I have resolved the problem by removing the entire iTunes Ecosystem from any of my future purchases. I am sure I will still need iTunes for device updates and the like. I just won't have to worry about pouring money into iTunes/iCloud (dare is say iFog?) where I won't be able to find my purchases six months down the road. Oh, and my 2 year contract just expired on my iPhone (my second), so I won't have anything tying me down to another when there are other choices out there. Too bad I just purchased my sixth Macbook Pro a few weeks ago (retina display, 768 GB SSD, 16 GB ram), or this sort of thing would make me reconsider my loyalty to Apple and their products over the last ten years.

What!? Whoa, it is exactly the same logo as the one from iTunes! Gee, if there is no correlation between the two, why would those Apple marketing people do that? If this is a generic cloud icon and is not a trade-marked logo connected with Apple iCloud, then I guess I can use it in my own marketing efforts? Let me know how many minutes I need to wait before the Apple Lawyers send the Apple Stoßtruppen to knock down my door.
