2012 mbp - slow wake up from sleep after last mbp update

Hi guys,

I have a regular mid 2012 macbook pro which now takes ages to wake from sleep after the last mbp update (the grayed out screen with the vertical bars filling up). I tried to reinstall the 10.8.2 combo update but: "Error: OS X Update can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." - great, apple, btw.

After setting the hibernate mode to 0 the problem still exists with no wake up speed increase. Does anyone have an idea what's going on or how to fix this? it's pretty annoying?

thanks!

j.

It's because you don't have a retina MBP. That's for those. There was another update that we got, that seems to be the issue.

Your problem happens after 4 hours of sleep with the AC connector in. Do the autopoweroff change, close the lid, plug in the AC, then go to bed. Tomorrow morning, open the lid, smile at the fact that your MBP is back to normal, then post here so others can find the help.

There was someone on another one of these threads that came up with the same idea about what was causing this, but they knew how to do the setting changes (I didn't). Having used their settings, I was VERY pleased it was fixed.

The main thing to be happy about is that we don't each have a broken computer. There is some kind of bug here, but hopefully it'll get sorted soon. In the mean time, we're lucky enough to have what seems to be a good workaround...

Thanks again leodanger. You are correct, I'm very happy my new machine is not broken! I've been a dyed-in-the-wool Apple user since the mid-1980's, sticking with them through thick and thin, and have been very happy I have. I do love this new one. Just an aside...I initially purchased a refurb model with the standard glossy screen, even though I have always used the antiglare screen. I regretted it as soon as I opened it up. Apple was a pleasure to work with, had no problem taking it back (got the refund within a week!), and I got the one I really wanted. They even paid for the return shipping. So I think this little annoyance just got under my skin, especially when I went through this thread and found out it has been an apparent problem for a while. It didn't help that it took almost a week of research to finally happen on this thread and figure out was what going on. So, I'll try the fix and let you know...

I know what you mean... if I'd been in the returns period, I'd have sent this back and stuck with our old one. Maybe even (dare I say it), building my own PC tower! I too have used Apple kit since my first machine – an LCIII with an 80MB HD and 8MB of RAM! Apple seem to have tried to help so far on this, but it'll be interesting to see the response when I ask them about this change. My biggest frustration is that often when you have a problem, you're told to go to the Apple Store, but not living in London means it's not that easy to get to one!

Someone on another post has suggested a sequence of resets that they said worked. I'm going to try those tonight, and will let you know. Still worth doing the autopoweroff setting though, as you'll be delighted tomorrow when your machine starts up correctly!

I've already made the change. A bit scary to go past their warning and enter my password!

I live in the outback of Nevada in the US. The closest Apple store is in Reno, which is also a bit of a drive for me. So I count on doing things by Internet, phone and mail.

I can't even remember what my first Apple was, although I do still have one of the very early Powerbooks that had a plastic case and a rolling ball! I can't even imagine living on a 80MB hard drive any more! My 2007 MBP had a 120 GB hard drive, and I basically filled it!

I look forward to the result of your experiment.....

Please report back on you findings. I'm sending a link to this and several other posts to the Apple technical dealing with my issue, so it all helps.

Remember to wait at least four hours with the AC plugged in!

I'll get back to you tomorrow morning with the results of the other post... I'm not hopeful, as that's all stuff I've tried (SMC reset, PRAM and plist), but maybe the sequence is important...

I'm moaning about a 40mile drive and some difficult parking to my Apple Store, but I'm guessing you have a lot further to go that me! Us Brits don't really have a grasp on the scale of driving you can have to do in the US!

I've reported the same problem already here. But I have noticed also the following, which might be of same/simillar cause.

I use a Apple TV2 ATV and straming video (in fact diashow) from the mac's iTunes library.

When I pause the video for some minutes and want to continue, it hangs. Beacuse the mbp went to sleep. I have the problem when on battery or on AC. On AC, it must not go to sleep, or at least the ATV should wake up the mbp.

I did not measure any timings, but I pretty sure, that I didn't hat these problems before. They came in with the hibernate issue we are discussing here. I have default settings for battery and AC power savings.

To prevent this, I have to be on AC and set the sleep timer to a very high time.

If others have observed the same, they might add this here. When I'm the only one, don't reply. I don't want to mess up this thread.

This really is weird.

3 days since I installed update 2.0 "Over" and after 10.8.2 and no issues experienced?

As reported before I have also changed the "hibernate" setting to 24 hours, although I intend to change this back to factory setting prior to any future updates?

Seems we are zeroing in on Upodate 2.0 being involved somehow, but cannot see how it would cure and cause problems by being installed and not being installed?

Mike – do you mean the autopoweroff delay to 24 hours? Important we get the right terms. If tht's what you've done, if you wake the machine within 24 hours it's the same as turning autopoweroff off.

Tina – the suggestion from another post didn't work, so I'm sticking with setting autopoweroff to off. Before I put it back though, I'm going to boot in safe mode, and leave it over 4 hours. This will be the last thing I need to know before I get back to Apple. Hope yours woke nicely after the setting change.

Apologies I may have been getting my terms mixed up this is the link I followed and adjusted.

http://www.ewal.net/2012/09/09/slow-wake-for-macbook-pro-retina/

The bove link confirms what I changed.

Agree that within 24hrs its the same thing but as good as afix for me as rarely do I leave the machine for that long?

Appreciate your help and input on this.

Kindest

Mike

My MBP woke up beutifully this morning. Just to recap, my original autopower and standby settings before I made any changes were:

Battery Power:

autopoweroff 0

autopoweroffdelay 0

standbydelay 0

standby 0

AC Power:

autopoweroff 1

autopoweroffdelay 14400

standbydelay 4200

standby 0

Which if you look at it, the settings look just reversed from what they should be.

I entered the command sudo pmset -a autopoweroff 0 in the Terminal utility. Interestingly, this changed the settings to:

Battery Power:

autopoweroff 0

autopoweroffdelay 14400

standbydelay 4200

standby 0

AC Power:

autopoweroff 0

autopoweroffdelay 14400

standbydelay 4200

standby 0

I have no ide whay the Battery settings changed, even though I didn't touch them. Although the time changed, the autopower and standy is still off, (0) which is bizarre for the battery. But I'm not messing with anything else at this point. I'm happy the issue is solved for now. Still hope Apple will do an update with a real fix.
