Multicam clips de-synch - Ready to kill

Okay. I have done this work 3 times now. Synched 2 cameras in a multicam clip.

However I have 2 problems.

1: When I select and move 2 angles the synch is not retained.

2: When I embed the multicam clip in a project or make a compound clip out of the mc clip, some sequences have no sound even though I have selected the proper audio track and ensured that that track is on inside the multicam clip.

Many thanks for help and hair transplants.

Sorry to hear the problems, and hope it is not a bug. I have been evaluating whether to move to FCPX from FCP 7 because of wanting a more efficient workflow to Vimeo. Currently I use FCP 7 and its QT Conversion to produce Vimeo acceptable video. Am also intrigued about mulitclips in FCXP since it can supposedly sync on audio track matching. I successfully do multiclips in FCP 7 between material shot on my Nikon D800 and my Sony camcorders. With both of those I shot in 24 fps, and transcoder and/or transfer at 1920 x 1080.

Hope someone doing this or attempting this adds their response, soon.

Hi Jakob. I understand about syncing. I do sync the angles but I might at that time cut bits out. This leaves gaps that I want to fill, so I move synchronised clips. I use markers to mark the sync points but when I move two clips (one above the other) and the sync desyncs. That's one problem.

The second problem is that if I've dragged the MC clip into a project and then go back and edit that underlying MC clip, changes are not always replicated above. To get it to work, I've had to recreate the project or reinsert the MC clip.

Hi again Ernie. Its all very frustrating because I've had to redo syncronisation, but I'm not sure that I have the right workflow. It may be, as Jakob says that I should only sync on multicam clips and not edit, but it seems obvious to me to do so and for FCPX to deal with it. In defense of FCP, I stick with it, because now that I'm using Apple Prores 422 format with a big RAID disk, the actual editing is fluid and enjoyable. One big point for me is not having to click to move the playhead thus reducing the tennis elbow risk.

Also in a multiclip you are only able to select one audio angle to playback, if you should want more than one you will need to handle that a little differently.

You can combine multiple audio angles with full flexibility in 10.0.6.

Check out yet another great episode of MacBreak Studio, where Steve Martin and Mark Spencer do a great job of explaining it: http://www.pixelcorps.tv/macbreak_studio (episode 190).

Mark,

Have you had success with material from cameras directly transferred into FCPX? I wonder if when you transcode the 1440 x 1090 with MPEG Streamclip, it would be better to at that time expand to the full 1920 from the subsampled rate of 1440?

Am I presuming too much to think that you see the edits at first, but they are not retained? Or are you never seeing the result of an edit?

Ernie. I can't capture direct on the iMac, there is no DV port. I would need to add a Canopus or Matrox. Also, I filmed in HDV which is 1440 x 1080 native. The specific problem is that I syced clips in a multicam sequence and then when I move the synced clips, they don't move exactly to the same place and so the sync must be redone.

The second problem is that if I embed the multicam clip in another and then mod that embedded clip, sometimes the edits do not show in the container clip. FCP does not relaunch rendering either after that mod and I think it should (bug?)

Mark,

Then you could set MPEG Streamclip to take it to 1920 x 1080 Pro Res, and test with that in FCPX. The 1440 x 1080 is a convenience for file size, and in realty is meant to provide 1920 x 1080. See:

I can only guess that the multiclip routines might not be liking the 1440 x 1080, even though FCPX will play it. I believe that if you were capturing direct, FCPX would change to the full raster 1920 x 1080, but cannot do that with the file you have provided it. Just a guess.
