Messages app won't let me sign on (thinks my password is wrong)

Messages has been working fine up until a couple of days ago. Now when I try to login, I enter my Apple ID and password and it rejects my password. After it failed, I went into iTunes store and clicked on Account from the store homepage. Even though you may already be logged into the store, going to the Account page always requires you to enter your Apple ID and password again. And it worked fine so I know nothing went screwy with my AppleID or password on Apple's end. So the problem seems to be with the Message application in 10.8.2.

Any idea what's going on?

Nope. The last time it was modified was October 20 and I don't remember touching it, so it might have been an update that touched it, but the problem didn't originate that far back.

Here's the contants if that's helpful:

Possible, I suppose as I do have GMAIL Chat configured by disabled. When I try to enable it, I enter my Google ID and password and it comes right up. When I try to access iMessage, I am specifically propted for my Apple ID and password, but when I enter them it fails. Just for grins, I enter my Google credentials instead, and as expected, that fails too.

If you go messages > preferences > accounts and click on details next to your account - it should prompt for password - is your password accepted here?

Open console and see what log entries are when you submit your password and when it fails, log might be more talkative

Just an idea...

If your Mac is of 2012, Apple today released 10.8.2 supplemental update that should fix keychain issues.

Hi,

I would also go to the Applications/Utilities folder and open Keychain Access.

Find the iMessages Authorisation item under the passwords section.

Double click it to bring up the Info panel

Use the Access Control tab.

If restricted it should list IMAgent, Messages and IMCore at least
